Codula Fuili is the name given to a deep karst canyon located in the Supramonte, specifically in the historical region of Ogliastra. The canyon ends directly at the beautiful Cala Fuili beach. The "Codula" (a Sardinian term referring to canyons and steep valleys) is now a dry canyon, as the water continues to flow underground through the vast Supramonte cave system.
To reach the canyon entrance, you start from Cala Fuili. The beach is easily accessible via a paved road from Cala Gonone, which brings you within 50 meters of the shore (https://goo.gl/maps/Ym8ME1kJpK52). From there, the climb begins along the canyon’s southern wall, following the trail toward Cala Luna, then taking a right at a fork. The path becomes a steep and panoramic ascent, offering breathtaking views over Cala Gonone and the entire Gulf of Orosei. After about 45 minutes, the trail reaches Ovile di Toddeitto, an ancient shepherd’s hut that has been restored to its former glory and can serve as a shelter for hikers.
From Ovile di Toddeitto, a gentle descent takes us in just a few minutes to intersect the bed of Codula Fuili. Step by step, the canyon narrows, and the towering walls seem to close in around us. Sunlight struggles to penetrate, and the landscape becomes increasingly wild and evocative. We reach the first easy 20-meter rappel, which is supported and beginner-friendly. Moving through the canyon, we navigate between massive boulders and giant holm oaks dominating the scenery.
Next comes the second rappel, the most spectacular of the adventure, giving the thrilling sensation of descending straight into the heart of the earth for 22 meters. Not far from here, the third and final rappel brings us closer to the exit of the Codula. We then walk through a vast forest of oleanders, which bloom beautifully in spring. As we approach the beach, the canyon walls reveal routes equipped for sport climbing—Codula Fuili is truly a paradise for climbers as well.
Our adventure lasts just over half a day and concludes at the stunning Cala Fuili beach, where we can relax and enjoy a refreshing swim. Canyoning in Codula Fuili is ideal for beginners looking to explore this incredible section of the Supramonte!
